Post-Treatment

Given EVT is a highly specialized procedure and available at a limited number of sites in Ontario, a provincial process has been established to support regional access to EVT centres. The process builds on systems in place for accessing tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA) and uses Criticall Ontario to coordinate referrals and transfer (from tPA sites).

Patients who have undergone EVT therapy are to be admitted to a designated critical care/step down and/or stroke unit with monitoring capabilities and protocols in place that follow current evidence-based stroke best practice recommendations. Once deemed ready by the health care practitioners, patients can be transferred to a stroke unit or be repatriated back to their home hospital.

CorHealth Ontario has provided recommendations and resources for the post-treatment phase in the Admission to Stroke Unit, Repatriation, and Follow-Up and Prevention.
